Cedar Planter

We’ve been talking about an outside planter for a while that would be big enough for vegetables and that we can move. The design is pretty simple and I left 2 sides of the base open so we can sweep under it.

Obviously, it would need to be made of cedar. I picked up four 8′ boards at the hardware store, cut them to size and dowel joined the side walls and bottom.

I assembled with dowels and clamped up overnight.

I used deck screws to attach the floor and then the base.

And drilled drainage holes.

I thought some hardy handles would be nice so that we could move it easier. I clamped them overnight and reinforced them with some deck screws.

The cedar was looking pretty drab and I read that tung oil is plant friendly and will help water proof the wood. I had a bottle hanging around so I put on a coat.

Kristy has some lima bean plants growing that she plans to transfer to the planter and we have some rich compost to help. I am pleased at how well the plant cage fits inside.

I will update when we actually fill it.
