Succulent Planter

I’ve been wanting to print a succulent planter for some tiny cacti that Kristy has been growing. The idea here is that there could be 4 cacti around a bell tower.

This design looks great in the 3D modeling software, but it totally bugs out in the printer software. Needless to say, the print failed miserably four times before I got a good build.

I think the printer gets hung up on arches, because it doesn’t put supports under them or will distort the model. Anyway, my work around was to separate the model into 3 parts, and take away the arches in the bell tower center. Also, the base was only successful being printed on it’s side, which is totally not intuitive.

I sanded the models down using 220 to get off the remaining supports and to smooth out the extrusion layers.

Here it is assembled.

I will need to super glue the top to the base and I may smooth it with some acetone. If your interested in that process, here is a good tutorial: https://all3dp.com/2/acetone-3d-print-smoothing-easy-steps/

If I do the acetone, I will include that process here.

The model is a little too small for the succulents, but we may try anyway. If it doesn’t work, i’d like to increase the dimensions and try again.

UPDATE: I glued the top to the base with a hot glue gun and Kristy put some tiny cacti in the boxes.

Super cute!
