Catalpa Box (part 4)

With the outer catalpa box nearly done, I started to assemble the spalted maple inner box. I’ve decided to make the inner box a kind of box with a drawer with a knob on the top to pull it out of the outer box. I’m thinking the box will be quarter inch Baltic birch with a cool face.

I cut the sections to width and then used the miter sled to rip the sides and then glued and assembled them. It was sick of my business, so it slinked away.

It came back when it calmed down.

To help clamp the box, I used an inner tube that I cut up into strips.

After measuring the back side, I cut a rectangle on the miter saw, glued it and tapped it in with a rubber mallet. I like to do it at this stage because it will clamp itself with the rest of the box.

I make sure that the inner box will fit into the outer box. It does and it felt good.

I’ve had this piece of padauk and purple heart marquetry laying around waiting for a perfect project. I think the time is now. It will be the drawer face. It has some gaps in it that I filled with wood putty, but it will do.

Because wasn’t happy with the luster of the outer box, I put another coat of gloss polyurethane on it. I’m curious to see how it dries this time and how much luster it has.

Next up: build the drawer and finish the inner box. Also, mount the hardware on the outer box.
